The process of making the Kyoto doll is very precise and the skilled workers each have their own individual responsibility for one aspect of the work, be it the design, the clothing or hair etc. This is a highly specialized manufacture system and features the unique characteristics of the Kyoto Doll. Kyoto has a long history of this sophisticated skill, which has kept the dolls quality as high as it is. This quality continues to this day. The craftsman has some resemblance to artists. Japanese people call such very skilled craftsman of Kyoto dolls "doll artists".



Kimekomi Doll



A servant at Kamigamo Shrine in Kyoto is said to have created a former version of Kimekomi doll by carving some willow in 1736. The doll was formerly called "Kamo doll" because Kamo River was famous for the great amount of willow trees. Kimekomi refers to a doll-making method of carving narrow grooves on the body of a doll and putting the edge of the cloth into the groove. Today,Kimekomi dolls are made from the solidly pressed powder of paulonia trees,instead of carved willow trees.

Koto is traditonal Japanese stringed instrument, made of wood. Koto is a kind of zither. It has been used as one of the main chamber instruments of Japanese traditional music style. In the Edo period(1603-1867), performing Koto was considered a necessary accomplishment for women, and many daughters of respectable families practiced Koto.

Kyoto Geisha Dance Doll


This doll is designed to look like Geisha dance.
Geisha are traditional, female Japanese entertainers. Geisha are trained in a number of traditional skills such as Japanese ancient dance, singing, playing instruments such as the Shamisen, flower arrangement, wearing kimono, tea ceremony, calligraphy and more. The importance of dance in the Japanese culture and to Geisha most likely originates from ancient religious practices. Famous Dances such as the Miyako Odori arise out of the nineteenth century and are now the most common dances performed by Geisha.

Samurai


The samurai (or bushi) were the members of the military class, the Japanese warriors. Samurai employed a range of weapons such as bows and arrows, spears and guns; but their most famous weapon and their symbol was the sword. Samurai were supposed to lead their lives according to the ethic code of bushido ("the way of the warrior"). Strongly Confucian in nature, Bushido stressed concepts such as loyalty to one's master, self discipline and respectful, ethical behavior.

Kyoto Art Doll -Sasa-Uma made Syozan

This is a doll of child who is playing with bamboo grass resemble to the gallant horse that promote the happiness and well-being of Japanese children. May 5 is "Kodomo-no-hi". Originally it was called "Tango-no-Sekku"(Boy's Festival) and was for celebrating boy's groeing up, but now it has become a day to celebrate children in general. On this day, families with boys set out dolls for "Tango-no-Sekku", patterned after warriors and heroes.
